What is a "living library"?
Living Library is a unique event seeking to challenge prejudice and discrimination. In the Living Library, books are people who have special personal stories, beliefs or experiences that they are ready to share with the visitors. "Reading" in the Living Library is a conversation between the books and the readers - conversations they would not normally have access to. The human books from the "bookshelf" of this library represent groups in our society that are often subject to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc.
Why do we need a living library in Luxembourg?
The intercultural dialogue has become one of the challenges of our time. The situation has become even more worrying with the economic and social issues caused by the Covid19 pandemic. This event supports dealing with challenges posed to intercultural dialogue, how to strengthen the competences to address prejudice and discrimination, and how to broaden intercultural dialogue among different segments of population. It proposes breaking the "single story" imposed about "the other" and invites the general population to participate in a truly intercultural encounter and to support the inclusion of Luxembourgish diversity.
What is the topic of the living library event on 10.12.21?
10th of December is Human Rights Day, which is the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that was adopted in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly. The Living Library Luxembourg on that day will be dedicated to the promotion of values, beliefs and attitudes that encourage all individuals to uphold their own rights and those of others.
Why should I attend this event?
Each of us need to come to Living Library on 10.12.21 as it will help us to develop an understanding of everyone's common responsibility to make human rights a reality in each community and in the whole society of Luxembourg.
LIVING LIBRARY LUXEMBOURG takes place at Forum Geesseknäppchen, Luxembourg-ville.
